Gun sketches

These are sketches of separate parts of the gun I am to model. Because my gun would be made up of many parts I needed to know what exactly I was modeling and how they would fit into each other. These sketches helped with this before I began modeling.

3D modeling- Movable stock

This stock is attached to the back of the gun.
I have yet to add the pistons to the stock so it becomes movable.

3d modeling- Handle and trigger guard

After adding the extra details, I selected the polygons of just the handle and added a mesh smooth to that selection.
The trigger is a separate piece of geometry and can move independently of the handle.

3D Modeling- Front grip

Starting out with just a box I manipulated the geometry until is was similar to the hand grip I had sketched out. I added a turbo smooth and extra edge loops around the edges.

3d modeling- adding detail to barrel and ammo cartridge

Using extrudes and manipulating the geometry I added more detail to the barrel.

3d modeling- adding the barrel and ammunation slots

These holes would allow the barrel, laser sight and ammunition cartridge to slide into the gun.

3d modeling- starting over

I decided at this stage I would do a product 'blow out' animation, so I would modeling the different parts of the gun separately. This is the main body of the gun, with room to allow the separate parts to click into place.

Starting 3d modeling

This is my first attempt at modeling the main body of the gun. I soon realized that to be able to animate the different parts of the gun I would have to model them separately.  I also thought that I should have split the gun down the middle and then use the symmetry modifier. This would cut the the amount of modeling I would have to do.
I decided to start over again.

Close to final design- Future pistol

Animation ideas:

  • Movable stock- the stock will move back and forward on pistons.
  • Movable barrel - when the gun fires the short barrel will move back and forward.Like a recoil animation.
  • Trigger- trigger can be pulled and gun fires, activating 'Moveable barrel' animation.
  • The top the pistol lifts up (as seen below) and allows the magazine clip to go into the gun at 1.
  • A mechanism lifts up the top of the gun (2.) exposing the magazine slot.
  • The small switch to the right of the trigger moves.
  • The small barrel below the top barrel will extend out of the gun, this is a lazer sight.

Gun research

For the Rigid Body, Modelling, Rigging and Animation I decided to do Project 1, Future weaponry.

I aim to design a futuristic pistol rather than a big bulky rifle, so I gathered together some research images to help inspire my design.
